Hokkaido Embraces Generative AI for Enhanced Administrative Efficiency

Hokkaido has officially adopted generative AI technology across most of its departments since the 10th, in a significant move to streamline administrative tasks. This technology, capable of autonomously generating text, aims to enhance the efficiency of operations.

The initiative began as a pilot program in October of the previous year, targeting 300 employees who expressed interest in utilizing generative AI. Following the demonstration of tangible benefits in operational efficiency, the technology was rolled out in full force, excluding the police force and high schools, from the 10th.

In the digital transformation division, employees can use the computer’s chat function to request suggestions for improving work-related tasks, such as proposing five methods to enhance workplace practices. The generative AI provides concrete responses within seconds.

In implementing generative AI, Hokkaido has established guidelines encompassing risk management strategies. Additionally, mandatory training sessions for employees have been instituted to prevent data breaches and copyright infringement.

Naoto Osada, the head of the Information Policy Division, commented on the distinct advantages of generative AI over traditional AI, which primarily focuses on automating routine tasks. He noted that generative AI proves particularly effective when contemplating ideas for projects. The division aims to foster a culture of sharing best practices among employees to leverage the technology’s full potential for quality responses.
