Sharp Corporation, in collaboration with KDDI Corporation, Datasection Inc., and Super Micro Computer Inc., has reached an agreement to initiate discussions on establishing an AI data center—a pioneering endeavor in the global technology landscape. The focus of this collaboration is to address the escalating need for AI data centers capable of managing the ever-expanding volume of data processed by artificial intelligence.

The joint venture aims to leverage the assets of each partner company to build an efficient and effective AI data center. Discussions will center around repurposing the Sharp Sakai Plant, a subsidiary factory in Sakai City, Osaka, which will cease large-scale LCD panel production by the end of this year. The site will be transformed into an AI data center equipped with cutting-edge AI computing platforms, including NVIDIA’s state-of-the-art GB200 NVL72, among others1.

Three key challenges in constructing a large-scale AI data center include procuring state-of-the-art computing equipment, developing an efficient cooling system to manage heat generation, and securing sufficient electric power and space. To address these challenges, Datasection plans to source advanced semiconductors used for image processing from NVIDIA through its partnership channels. KDDI, on the other hand, will contribute to network infrastructure construction and operation, ensuring seamless connectivity for the data center.

The former Sharp Sakai Plant, with its existing infrastructure, is well-positioned to meet the electricity demands of the AI data center. By repurposing this facility, the joint venture aims to create a state-of-the-art data center that can effectively handle AI workloads. The project aligns with KDDI’s commitment to digital transformation (DX) and its vision of creating a society where dreams become reality through enhanced connectivity2.

As AI technology continues to evolve, the demand for advanced facilities grows. The collaboration between Sharp, KDDI, and Datasection represents a significant step toward building a sustainable and innovative AI ecosystem in Japan, contributing to the revitalization of the entire economy.
